What kind of flooring is right for me?

Before you venture out and go shopping do a little planning and think of things you need to ask. Most floors are now priced by the square foot so be sure to have an approximate square footage of the room(s) you plan to decorate. For larger areas where carpet or resilient is an option ask where the seams will fall. Proper floor care is essential for keeping your floors looking like like-new, go over the proper methods for caring for your new floor. For hard surface products (wood, laminate, ceramic and vinyl) ask about the proper floor protectors for furniture legs.

Things to keep in mind when you are shopping for flooring.

Activity - How well will the floor hold up to traffic?
Kids - Pets How well will the floor hold up to kids and pets?
Moisture - Humidity Will the floor be effected by excessive moisture or humidity?
Maintenance - What are the recommended floor care procedures and how often?
Sunlight - What will sunlight (UV rays) do to my floor? What precautions should I take?

What is the difference between Unfinished & Prefinished?

Unfinished floors require several days to install, stain and finish the flooring. Prefinished floors are less messy and can be installed and completed the same day. A factory-applied finish like Mohawk's exclusive Crystal shield finish with aluminum oxide is extremely durable and could not be duplicated with a job-site finish.

Prefinished refers to when the finish is applied to the floor. A prefinished floor has the finish applied at the mill where the floor is made. This allows for a more consistent looking finish with less imperfections than a floor that has been installed and then sanded and finished. This also means a prefinished floor can be installed and walked on much sooner than a sand and finish floor and also with less mess and smell. The prefinished hardwood products we offer on our web site have long warranty times against wear.

What is the difference between Solid & Engineered?

There are two basic types of hardwood flooring - solid and engineered. Engineered hardwood floors are made from layers (plies) of both hardwood and softwood. The top layer is typically a solid ply of the species. Solid hardwood flooring is not made up of any plies. It is the pure solid hardwood species and typically costs more.

With a little basic understanding about the different types of wood floors you can be better prepared and more confident in your selection. Wood floors are produced in both solid and engineered planks and strips and come in a wide variety of wood species. To help determine which type of floor will work best for your situation depends upon the location within your home and the type of subfloor.

Solid Wood Floors
Solid wood floors are one solid piece of wood and are generally 3/4" thick. Mohawk Solid Hardwood Floors are produced from the finest American and Canadian hardwoods including red & white oak, ash, American cherry, hickory and maple, and are available in several widths. Because solid hardwood floors are more susceptible to moisture than engineered wood floors they should only be installed above grade over approved wooden subfloors and must be nailed-down. Solid wood floors can generally be recoated and refinished several times.

Engineered Wood Floors
These floors are produced by laminating several hardwood plies together to form the planks. Most engineered floors can be glued-down, stapled-down or floated over a variety of subfloors including wood, dry concrete slabs and some types of existing flooring. Engineered hardwood floors have cross-ply construction which reduces the expansion/contraction of planks caused by variations in humidity and allows these floors to be installed anywhere in the home. Mohawk Engineered Hardwood Floors come in a wide variety of widths, thicknesses and colors in both North American and Exotic hardwoods.

What are Trims & Moldings for?

Trims and moldings are an integral part of any flooring installation. To give your Flooring the finished touch we offer custom wood trims & moldings to match any of your hardwood flooring selections. The color coordinated moldings are all precision matched to accentuate the design of your floor. You can eliminate those unsightly nail and putty marks, as well as permit the natural expansion and contraction of the floor.

Reducer Strip is used to create a smooth transition between two floors of different heights, as well as protect the planks exposed edge from damage caused by foot traffic.

Overlapping Stair Nosing this is similar to a flush stair nosing except the nosing overlaps the exposed edge of the floor. The overlapping stair nosing is secured to the sub floor and not to the laminate floor so the floor is free to move. Never butt the nosing tightly to the laminate flooring.

T-Molding are used to bridge two areas of flooring that are the exact same height. The T-Molding overlaps the exposed edges of the floor and is secured only to the sub floor, never to the flooring itself. Generally this trim is used as the transition piece between rooms, or as the expansion piece for areas that exceed 30 feet in length.

Universal Edge is also called a Square Nosing and is used where the laminate flooring butts up to carpeting, or various vertical surfaces where the edge will be exposed, such as along a fireplace.

Quarter Round give the floor a finished look and protects the edges of the laminate flooring. Never secure the quarter round to the laminate flooring. Instead, the quarter round should always be attached to the vertical wall.

What is base board and should it be removed?

Baseboard does not need to be removed when installing flooring, however you will need to add a quarter round in addition to the baseboard after installing the floor to hide the expansion gap needed when installing a laminate or hardwood floor. If you do not want to add quarter round, then removal and reinstalling the base board will be necessary.

How will a hardwood floor hold up with pets?

This depends on how tame or active your pets are. Most of our floors have extra abrasion free coating in aluminum oxide which help to prevent scratches from larger pets. Even though this material helps in protecting the floor from scratches and abrasions; scratches aren't really avoidable. The best to do would be to groom the pets (nail trimming, bladder training).

The simple reality is that any floor can be adversely affected by a pet, through either scratches or stains from urine. Hardwood is more susceptible to scratches, so a larger pet with claws will have impact. Even tile, though nearly impervious to scratches, is vulnerable to staining because of grout lines and having a potentially porous surface.

As with any floor, to prevent stains from urine or other accidents, it is of the utmost importance to spot clean immediately at the site of the accident and to maintain the floor through vigilant care the rest of the time. If you are providing good maintenance on the floor, it will retain its beauty for a longer period.

Which type of wood should we use in a very hot climate?

All of the products we sell can be used in any climate as long as the interior of the home is climate controlled year around. The flooring can be damaged if the temperature or humidity in the home reach extreme levels.

What is the best floor to use in the dining room?

The most popular floor used in a dining area is Hardwood. Many people who are looking for formal looking dining area will choose a select grade hardwood floor. This is the most traditional floor for a dining area, but there are also many other choices. For a more casual look a rustic looking floor can be used to create a more worn look. These floors generally have more of the Hardwoods natural flaws showing.

Laminate floors are the second most popular next to Hardwood floors for use in a dining area. Many of these floors have the look of a Hardwood floor, but are much harder and will not dent like a real Hardwood floor. These floors are easy to maintain and there isn't much that will stick to them.

What is used in front of the exterior doorways?

The type of flooring that should be used in front of a door to your exterior is going to be unique to your home, but a good place to start is usually laminate flooring, Ceramic Tile, or even real wood. Keep in mind that these high traffic areas will suffer the most frequent abuse, so it is important to think practically. Any of the types of flooring above can be used, but all of them require your constant attention to maintain. Constant cleaning is needed in these area's to increase the longevity of your floor.

The type of transition you should use to an exterior doorway is end cap/square nose: Use this floor transition when meeting up to exterior doors including sliding doors as well as when meeting up to carpeting in doorways or transition areas.

What are common finishes used on prefinished flooring?

Finishes are very popular today because they are durable, water-resistant and require minimal maintenance. Most finishes are blends of synthetic resins. These finishes are most often referred to as urethanes. Polyurethane's remain on the surface of the wood and form a protective coating. They are generally available in high-gloss, semi-gloss, satin and matte.

Common Pre-finished Flooring Finishes:

1. Acrylic Impregnated – Acrylic monomers are injected into the cell structure of the wood to give increased hardness and then finished with a wear layer over the wood.

2. Acrylic-urethane – Has a slightly different chemical make up than polyurethane, but with similar benefits.

3. Aluminum Oxide – particles added to the polyurethane finish to increase the abrasion resistance of the wear layer. This has become extremely popular on the better grades of hardwood floors.

4. Ceramic – Advanced finish technology that allows the use of space-age ceramics to increase the abrasion resistance of the wear layer.

5. Polyurethane – A clear, tough and durable finish that is applied as a wear layer.

6. UV-cured – these floors are finished at the factory and the polyurethane finish are cured with Ultra Violet lights instead of using heat.

What is the most common finish used for laminate floors?

Laminate Flooring is made up of a surface similar to that of countertops. The scratch and dent resistance is much higher on laminate floors than on laminate counter tops however. Laminate floors wear well and many have 20 plus years warranties. It is a good low maintenance option for an active household.

How do you refinish Hardwood floors?

Hardwood floors are refinished through a sand and refinish process. The floors must be sanded with a floor sanding machine to make the surface of the floor smooth again. Then a new wear layer must be applied to the floor to protect it from wear. Not all floors can be refinished, usually only solid hardwood floors can be considered for sanding and refinishing. Floor sanding machines can be rented at many building supply stores or equipment rentals. However, it is recommended to have the floor professionally refinished if you are unfamiliar with this repair process.

How do you refinish Laminate floors?

Laminate floors are only pictures of the flooring that has been applied to a high density fiber board core. Since these floors are not real wood and only a picture they can not be sanded and refinished.

How do you repair dents?

Dented hardwood floors are repaired through a sand and refinish process. The floors must be sanded with a floor sanding machine to make the surface of the floor smooth again. Then a new wear layer must be applied to the floor to protect it from wear. Floor sanding machines can be rented at many building supply stores or equipment rentals. However, it is recommended to have the floor professionally refinished if you are unfamiliar with this repair process.

How do I test my subfloor for moisture?

A sub-floor with too much moisture will cause problems after the install. A high moisture content can usually be corrected by simply sealing the floor to block the moisture from coming through. Extreme moisture problems will call for more involved methods to correct the problem.

A simple way to test a subfloor for moisture content is to tape down a 1' by 1' sheet of plastic to the subfloor and leave it for 24 hours. If, when removing the plastic, the subfloor looks darker or there are moisture droplets, additional testing is required before installing a new floor. Consult a professional.

What are the different installation methods?

As a general rule, most floors are either glue down, nail/staple down, or floating installation methods.

Glue down is gluing the floor down to the subfloor.

Floating is when you install the floors connecting them together and just leave them hanging over the sub floor. Basically all the floors that can be floated have a special type of tongue and groove or click or snap mechanisms.

Click is a type of interlocking system utilized mostly by laminate floor manufacturers and also used by some hardwood brands. This easy installation type does not require glue making installation a snap (pun intended). This type of installation method is most commonly found with floating floors, which require a separate underlayment.

How do you install in the bathroom?

First of all, you must be very careful in choosing the floor to install in the bathroom. Be sure that the item's warranty covers water damage and moisture damage. Overall, the best flooring to install in the bathroom is still ceramic or vinyl tile. Laminates are next in line.

How do I install over concrete?

Certain floors are made specifically for concrete sub floor installation. You may either glue down the flooring directly to the sub floor or use a floating floor installation. Just make sure the manufacturer of that flooring recommends the specific installation method you use.

Can I install flooring in a basement?

The basement is a moist place. Make sure the flooring you choose is suitable for basement installation. The manufacturers warranty will mention where it will or will not cover moisture damage. If you are not sure about your floor's moisture level - you can take an extra precaution by using a moisture barrier.

What flooring materials available for damp basement?
There are no indoor flooring materials available that can be installed in a damp area. If you have a room that has an excess amount of moisture, you will first need to solve the moisture problem before a floor can be installed.

What is a typical cost for installation of flooring?
